Legal & General project evaluation

The project was a live project set by Legal & General. The brief was to produce a series of slides with the purpose of using them to educate young people about insurance.
We worked in groups to collaborate ideas and to spread the work out so it was easier to accomplish. We had to base each of our individual work on a collective style so when put together they look consistent.
To start with I experimented with Illustrator to develop a simple and bright coloured style for the illustrations. I drew a figure using simple shapes with a bold, white outline around it and block shadows. This figure helped define the art style of my group.
In my group we assigned each other jobs to help spread out the work. My job was to create two slides, one on car insurance and one on accident insurance. I made illustrations related to each on illustrator to start with. I made a man falling off a ladder and a man with a broken leg for accident insurance and I drew a crashed car for car insurance. I tried to keep the style consistent with all these designs and I feel I was successful.

I made an animation of a man walking that could be incorporated into the presentation.
To create this animated gif first I had to create a person on illustrator. I copied the original image multiple times and altered the leg and arm positions each time to create animation frames.
I exported this image and imported it to photoshop. I brought up the timeline and changed the mode to frame animation. For the first frame I resized the first frame on the image I made to fit the art board. I made a second frame and dragged the image along to the next walking frame. I continued this process until I got to the last frame on the page. when I played the frames, they moved smoothly as if the man was really walking. I had to adjust a few frames so that the body lined up and then I exported it as a GIF.
One problem I encountered was when I played the animation the arms jerked back from the last frame to the first. To fix this problem I had to make a copy of the frame sequence and adjust the arms so the left one moved right and the right one moved left so that the arms swayed smoothly from side to side.

For the slide designs we used a simplistic layout and colour scheme. The backgrounds featured vibrant colours and rectangles which use different shades of the same colour. The titles are at the top left within a rectangle. We kept the font consistent throughout all our slides, and made it either white or black. Overall I think we effectively made our work look consistent. However, we took some advice from Legal & General to improve it. They told us some ways to make the style more consistent, they advised us to use white lines in all of the illustrations to match with the majority of my illustrations. They also told us to replace the placeholder text with the information they had supplied us with.

We took on their advice and made these changes. I had to change the style of a car which stood out because it looked 3D, in order to change this and make it consistent with the style I drew a white line around the top of the car. Another change I made was to make the font on the car insurance slide white so it stood out from the bright red background, making it easier to read.

Overall I think me and my team worked well together to produce a piece of work that looks like it could have been created by one person. I also feel that we have created an effective and appealing looking style.
If I were to improve anything it would be to integrate the slides into a video presentation so they flow nicely and make it more interesting.

Final designs

Taking advice from the Legal & General people I improved the slides in a variety of ways. These are the final products.
A major change I made was to input the text from the word document L&G made into the slides so it wasn't just placeholder text.

I was advised to change the style of the 3D looking car on the left as they felt it was inconsistent of the style. In order to make it consistent I drew a white line around the top of the car. When we pitched it again they were happy with how it looked.

For this slide I changed the black writing to white to make it easier to read on a bright red background.

Walking man GIF

To create this animated GIF first I had to create a person on illustrator. I copied the original image multiple times and altered the leg and arm positions each time to create animation frames.

I exported this image and imported it to Photoshop. I brought up the timeline and changed the mode to frame animation. I had to adjust a few frames so that the body lined up and then I exported it as a gif.

One problem I encountered earlier on was when I first created the frame image I only made the first row so the arms jerked back from the last frame to the first. To fix this problem I had to make another row so that the arms swayed smoothly from side to side.

AccidentGif

Animated Gif

I struggled to export this animation as a Gif and loop it continuously. To overcome this problem I had to export the animation as a video from After Effects and import it to photoshop. From photoshop I was able to export it as a Gif. However the Gif moved at an incredibly slow frame rate so I had to speed up the frame rate then go to File, Export, Save for web. I selected Gif, and exported it from there.
